Uncharted Colors
HELIOTROPE PURPLE MICA

In 1771, Joseph de Jussieu, the naturalist who introduced one of the most popular colors and fragrances of the time to Europe, disappeared in his home for the last time. He would not publish anything or go anywhere until his death eight years later, in 1779.

Jussieu, a French physician and avid botanist, traveled in 1735 with a scientific expedition to Peru; his training and interests allowed him to perform the roles of both physician and naturalist. During his stay in the Peruvian Andes, Jussieu discovered a beautiful and aromatic plant whose flowers turned towards the sun as the day progressed: the heliotrope, from the Greek words "helios" (sun) and "trepein" (to turn).

Jussieu introduced the heliotrope to Europe in 1751, where it quickly became immensely popular. However, Jussieu, who remained in Peru due to lack of money, his work as a doctor, and his compulsion to explore, would not return to his country until 20 years after the heliotrope's arrival on the continent.

In 1771, when he finally returned to France, he learned that most of his discoveries had been lost at sea or stolen. His scientific documents, left in Lima for safekeeping, were destroyed upon the death of their custodian. Jussieu's mental state, already exhausted after his years in South America, deteriorated drastically, culminating in a deep depression and self-imposed exile.

However, her contribution to fashion and fragrances would continue to grow, bringing a magical and deep fragrance to gardens around the world (many describe it as a smell of cherry pie).

Our new Uncharted Color, inspired by these complex yet delicate flowers, will help guide any project towards the sunlight.

Bonito color
